Galen Rupp: The superhero American athlete

Galen RuppBorn in Portland, Oregon; Galen Rupp is an American athlete currently being trained under Alberto Salazar. He is mainly known as the recent American record holder at 10,000 meter with a time of 26:44:36. While at the indoors he holds a record of 3000 meter with a time of 7:30:16, 2 miles with a time of 8:07:41 as well as 5000 meter with a time of 13:01:26. A member of the Nike Oregon Project, Galen Rupp won the silver medal in the10000 meter at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. Rupp was also a member of the 2008 United States Olympic Team. He is a six time USA outdoor 10,000 meter champion continuing from the year 2008 up to 2013, 2012 Olympic Trails 5,000 meter champion, 2013 USA Outdoor 5000m runner up, two time USA Indoor 3,000 meter runner up, USA Outdoor 10,000 meter runner up in 2007, 2012 Olympic 10,000 meter silver medallist. When it comes to collegiate championships, Rupp has won the 2005 USA cross country championship; he stood in the runner- up position in the 2007 NCAA 10,000 meter race, he was the 2008 NCAA cross country champion, 2009 NCAA indoor 3,000 meter and 5,000 meter champion, 2009 NCAA Outdoor 5,000 meter and 10,000 meter champion. He was also honoured with the 2004 National High School Athlete of the Year award. Rupp is also the 2009 Bowerman Award winner which signify the national track and field athlete of the year. What is astonishing is that in 2007 alone he won 7 NCAA awards which included two outdoors, one indoor and four cross country plays. Rupp is also the first person in the NCAA history to have won 3,000 meter, 5000 meter as well as the distance medley relay in a single indoor championship. Having finished the New York City Marathon in a record time of 1:00:30 he is the third fastest American in the given distance. Weighing 138 pounds, this American track runner was originally a soccer player but when his trainer Alberto Salazar spotted him, he realised Rupp’s potential in track field. Under Salazar’s training, Rupp won three individual championships in track and field as well as two Oregon state titles in cross country in the year 2002 and 2003 respectively. Rupp has broken high school records twice and played in the Oregon Ducks team while in college. Rupp also finished second in the 2003 Foot Licker Cross Country Championships. The list of awards, titles and honours accredited under one name; Galen Rupp is so long that one is always amazed with just the thought of an individual achieving so much in such a young age and within such a small period of time. His unending spirit, positivity, hard work, strength as well as determination has inscribed his name hard in the pages of World history and it is a bit difficult to break the records set by this athlete.
