UEFA Champions League is inarguably the most prestigious club competition in European football. But its popularity is not limited to Europe alone, since the tournament attracts global viewership on a massive scale. As per hard data collected by television monitoring experts, the first ever all-German UEFA final of the 2012-13 season, played between Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund, was watched by a record 360 million viewers across the world. That match was played at London’s Wembley Stadium and its TV viewership record is still unsurpassed. And there is a powerful reason why. The advent of smartphones and an enormous spread of social media have changed people’s perceptions on viewing live events in modern times. Since Facebook and Twitter provide instantaneous interactions, technical savvy fans prefer watching sports events via the social media sites on tablets or smartphones. Television sets installed in pubs or drawing rooms do not provide the freedom to air or share ones thoughts. Regardless, UEFA Champions League football is still a huge crowd puller in stadia and still a keenly watched event on television. After the draw for the Group-stage for the 2016-17 Season on August 25, Match-Day 1 games were played on September 13 & 14. Like every year, there are 32 teams, divided in 8 groups in this stage and all of them finished their first matches this week.
