India’s Sindhu Srikanth Sail into the Third Round of 2015 World Badminton Championship

While women’s top seed Carolina Marin has won her first match, India’s Saina Nehwal is yet to take to the court and her match is scheduled for Wednesday. Meanwhile there was some cheer for Indian fans as PV Sindhu stormed into the third round with a three-game victory against Line Kjaersfeldt of Denmark. The 11th seeded Indian’s next opponent is the formidable no.3 seed Chinese Li Xuerui, who came through in the third round by disposing of Bulgaria’s Petya Nedelcheva. Sindhu’s countryman and third seeded Kidambi Srikanth also crossed the first hurdle by defeating Australia’s Michael Fariman in two easy games. In the men’s doubles, however, Indian team of Manu Attri/Sumeeth Reddy fell in their first round match against China’s Cai Yun/Lu Kai. India also lost a women’s doubles match, when the pair of Dhanya Nair/Mohita Sahdev lost to Frenchwomen Delphine Lansec/Emlie Lefel. Other notable victors on Tuesday included, no.2 seed Jan O Jorgensen of Denmark, 5-time world champion Lin Dan, Malaysia’s former world no.1 Lee Chong Wei, Indonesia’s no.15 seed Tommy Sugiarto, China’s no.7 seeded women Wang Shixian. In addition, all four mixed doubles pair from China reached the third round.

Defending women’s champion and top seed Carolina Marin of Spain eased into the third round after dropping her opening game against Malaysia’s Tee Ying Ji. The Spaniard was severely challenged by the Malaysian woman in the opener, before she took the game at 21-19. But the no.1 seed Spaniard made an impressive comeback in the next two games to clinch the match 19-21, 21-14, 21-13. India’s eleventh seeded PV Sindhu had a tough opponent in Denmark’s Line Kjaersfeldt. Sindhu made too many errors as the Dane snatched the first game away from her at 21-11. The Indian, however, bounced back smartly into the match, taking the second and third games and finished with a 11-21, 21-17, 21-16 victory. Sindhu faces a very tough challenge in her third round match as she plays former world no.1 and third seeded China’s Li Xuerui. The Chinese star was untroubled in her 21-10, 21-11 victory over Bulgaria’s Petya Nedelcheva in just 23 minutes. India’s Kidambi Srikanth brought further cheers for Indian badminton fans by progressing to the third round by beating Australia’s Michael Fariman 21-10, 21-13 in 24 minutes. However there was disappointment for India in the men and women’s doubles draw. The men’s pair of Manu Attri/Sumeeth Reddy lost their first round match 9-21, 7-21 against China’s Cai Yun/Lu Kai and in women’s doubles, Dhanya Nair/Mohita Sahdev lost 18-21, 16-21 to Frenchwomen Delphine Lansec/Emlie Lefel.

No. 2 seed Jan o Jorgensen of Denmark defeated Thailand’s Boonsak Ponsana 21-9, 21-19; Five-time world champion and no.5 seed Lin Dan of China defeated USA’s Sattawat Pongnairat 21-8, 21-11 and Malaysia’s Lee Chong Wei crossed the first hurdle by an easy 21-9, 21-13 victory over Lithuania’s Kestutis Navickas in 28 minutes. In other notable matches on Tuesday, Indonesia’s no.15 seed Tommy Sugiarto defeated Spain’s Pablo Abian 21-16, 21-13 in men’s singles; Chinese no.7 seeded Wang Shixian beat USA’s Iris Wang 21-13, 21-11. All four of China’s mixed doubles pairs reached the third round with comfortable victories over their opponents. They included; no.1 seeds Zhang Nan/Zhao Yunlei; no.4 seeded Liu Cheng/Bao Yixin; no.6 seeds Lu Kai/Huang Yaqiong and no.2 seeds Xu Chen/Ma Jin.
