In a nail-biting finish to their campaign, the Indian Women’s Hockey Team regained the Asia Cup after 13 years. Defeating China in their final encounter, the match went down to the wire. Not only did it require penalty shootout, but a sudden death to decide the winner. Both the teams were equal at 1-1 in regulation time and 4-4 after the shootout. However, a goal by Rani and a save by Savita in the sudden death ensured the victory. Following this win, the women join the men as the continental champions.
The Indian forwards kept the game in their control as they made brave strides into China’s defense. With the first breakthrough coming from the antics of Navjot and Rani, the captain. Following the 1-0 lead, the women in blue dominated the third quarter. Though, they could not penetrate the striking circle. After 47 minutes of the match, China earned a penalty corner. Pouncing well on the opportunity, the scores were level after a successful strike from China.
A consistent play by Indian Women’s Hockey Team
The Golden Girls of Hockey have put up a clinical performance throughout the tournament. Apart from beating their higher-ranked opponents, they have also sealed a 2018 World Cup berth. This achievement in itself is commendable. The women’s team has clicked at the right time and has been led very well by captain Rani. Not to forget the excellent goalkeeping by Savita when it mattered the most. She was adjudged goalkeeper of the tournament for her massive effort.
