Muguruza vs Serena Williams Wimbledon final

Muguruza vs Serena Williams Wimbledon final

When Garbine Muguruza broke Serena Williams’ service in the first game of opening set, punters, who laid their bets for her victory were delighted. Then the Spaniard held serve to make it 2-0 despite Serena doing her best. It was great start from Muguruza and she had done something similar against Radwanska in the semifinal. The Spaniard was returning wonderfully and with Serena struggling with her first serve, Muguruza saw a chance to create havoc at center court. In next to no time, Muguruza was up 4-2 after the sixth game, in which Serena held two break points but Muguruza managed to save them. So far so good and all that Garbine Muguruza needed now, was to just hold her service in the games to follow. Well; that didn’t happen as Serena found her rhythm to reel off 4 points on trot, won the first set and took a massive 5-1 lead in the second. The best Muguruza did, was to create some last-minute scare for Serena by breaking her twice but lost the match, when her own service was broken by Serena. All her dreams were torn to shreds by a re-composed Serena, who recorded her sixth Wimbledon victory in 16 years. The win also means that Serena now has 21 Grand Slams in her kitty. If she also wins the US Open in August/September, Serena will complete the Calendar-year Grand Slam.

The women’s final started with a hiccup for Serena Williams as she watched young Garbine Muguruza putting on a brave act. The champion at year’s two earlier Grand Slams, committed three double faults in the first game of the match. In the next few games too, Serena was error-prone and her service delivery had not improved. That allowed a 4-2 lead for the 21-year old Spaniard. Then the world’s best woman tennis player got back her game. On Muguruza’s service in the seventh game, Serena began by producing a ferocious return and soon held two break points against the Spaniard. Muguruza saved one but Serena pushed her back to obtain the break. Serena took her next service game to love and it was evident that the American was back on track. Muguruza looked frustrated as she lost another service game as Serena snatched the first set 6-4.

In the second set, Serena began by taking the first game on serve with confidence oozing out of her. Though Muguruza also held her serve to make it 1-1, she looked much less assured. The chances of her clawing back into the match looked gloomy with Serena playing her true and powerful game. From 1-1, Serena won 4 straight points to make it 5-1 with her own service to follow. From somewhere, Muguruza extracted a new-found resolve and forced the top seed into errors. From sealing the set and the match, Serena was broken at love by the young Spaniard, who drew a great round of applause at the center court. In the ninth game on Serena’s service, Muguruza broke again and the crowd roared. Could this be the greatest comebacks of all time? But in the tenth game, Muguruza threw away all the good work and handed Serena the crucial break that culminated in her sixth victory at Wimbledon. As the match ended 6-4, 6-4 in Serena’s favor, Center Court rose to applaud one of the greatest players in tennis history. It was Serena’s 21st Grand Slam but it didn’t come without some heroics from Muguruza.
