We had earlier looked at India’s Medal hopes at Rio 2016 in the sports of Hockey(Men’s), Shooting and Badminton. Continuing that sequence Let’s have a look at 3 other Sports in which Indian athlete have huge potential and there’s a lot of hope that they will bring Medal for the country.
Archery
And the Medal hopes rest largely on the Shoulder of Deepika Kumari & in the team event. The Women’s team is expected to bring India’s first archery medal ever. This team is rated very highly by the coaches and with recent efforts shown by the federation as well as players we are also pretty confident that this team will bring a medal for the Country. The archery team has already arrived at Rio and are the first team from India to land in Brazil ahead of Rio Olympics 2016. The team went four weeks before date to get acclimatised to the conditions.
Talking about team’s progress, India’s head coach Dharmendra Tiwari said,
“The weather is pleasant, it’s less windy and temperature drops a bit at night.So far we have had three sessions, including one under lights”.
Wrestling –
India has qualified eight wrestlers to the event which Includes 5 men and 3 women Wrestler’s. Sandeep Tomar,Narsingh Pancham Yadav & Yogeshwar Dutt have qualified for the men’s freestyle event while Ravinder Khatri & Hardeep Singh have qualified for Men’s Greco-Roman. Meanwhile Vinesh Phogat, Babita Kumari & Sakshi Malik will represent India in Women’s Freestyle event.
The biggest hope for India in Wrestling is undoubtedly the veteran Yogeshwar Dutt who won bronze in the 2012 london olympics. Plus the other boys who qualified are also expected to perform well and we might actually get more than 2-3 medals in Rio.
Vinesh Phogat carries the hope of Indian women’s and is a strong contender for medal in her 48Kg freestyle category
Tennis
The mixed doubles team and the Men’s double team are the most hopeful of getting the medal. With rank 1 in doubles Sania is pairing with world no 10 Rohan Bopanna and this is probably the best chance for Sania to add an Olympic medal to her amazing title collections.
