Novak Djokovic reached another Masters final at the Uniprix Stadium in Montreal on Saturday, when he finished a great run of Frenchman Jeremy Chardy. The world no.1 Djokovic, who fought back from 2-match point deficit against Latvia’s Earnests Gulbis in the earlier match, had no issues against Chardy. In a 79- minute match, Djokovic yielded just ten points on his serve in the whole match and never faced a break point, while Chardy saved nine match points just to stay in the game. In the end, Djokovic cruised to an easy 6-4, 6-4 victory. In the final on Sunday, the top seed will clash with no.2 seed Andy Murray, who crushed Japanese star Kei Nishikori 6-3, 6-0 in 65 minutes. After a fantastic first set, in which Murray mounted a furious attack, the second set was a one-sided affair as Murray finished with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over the Japanese.
In the men’s double finals on Sunday, Daniel Nestor of Canada and Edouard Roger-Vasselin of France will fight for the title against the no.1 seed and world’s most decorated doubles combo of Mike and Bob Bryan of USA. In the semifinal, Nestor/Roger-Vasselin defeated Serbians Novak Djokovic/Janko Tipsarevic 3-6, 6-1, 10-4. The Bryans, on their part, came through with a 6-7, 6-4, 10-7 victory over Austria’s Alexander Peya and Brazil’s Bruno Soares.
The women’s draw at Toronto saw the second defeat of 2015 for Serena Williams. The world’s best women’s tennis player was beaten by Belinda Bencic of Switzerland in three sets. The 18-year old Bencic played marvelous tennis and after losing the first set to turn the tables on Serena with a 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 victory. From one stage, at which Serena was poised for a straight-sets win, Bencic barged back, when Serena double-faulted on set point. This was the turning point since Bencic took the second set and ran away to a 4-0 lead in the third. Although Serena broke Bencic twice, she couldn’t keep the momentum going as the Swiss teenager romped home with a 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 win over the world no.1. In the final on Sunday, Bencic will clash with no.2 seed Simona Halep, who defeated Italy’s Sara Errani in straight sets 6-4, 6-4.
Women’s top seeds Martina Hingis/Sania Mirza fell in the semifinal to the French-Slovenian duo of Caroline Garcia/Katarina Srebotnik after promising themselves another ATP title. Garcia/Srebotnik displayed uncanny alacrity in beating Hingis/Mirza 6-3, 6-2. For the title game on Sunday, Garcia/Srebotnik will take on no. 3 seeds and two-time Grand Slam champions USA’s Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Czech Republic’s Lucie Safarova, who defeated Frenchwoman Kristina Mladenovic and Czech Karolina Pliskova 6-4, 7-6.
