India vs Ireland 1st T20I Abhishek Sharma's Fifty Goes in Vain as Ireland Stun India by 34 Runs

IND vs IRE 1st T20I Highlights: Ireland produced a clinical all-round performance to defeat India by 34 runs in the first T20I of the two-match series at the Civil Service Cricket Club in Belfast on Friday. Despite a fighting half-century from Abhishek Sharma, India were bowled out for 148 while chasing 183.

The defeat marks a disappointing start to India’s new era under captain Shreyas Iyer, who took charge after World Cup-winning skipper Suryakumar Yadav.

Lorcan Tucker Anchors Ireland to 182/9

After winning the toss, Shreyas Iyer opted to bowl first against Lorcan Tucker’s Ireland. The hosts made the most of the opportunity with their captain leading from the front.

Lorcan Tucker played a superb innings of 50 from just 36 deliveries, providing the backbone of Ireland’s total of 182/9 in 20 overs. His aggressive approach ensured that Ireland maintained momentum throughout the innings and posted a challenging target on a good batting surface in Belfast.

India’s bowlers managed to pick up wickets at regular intervals but failed to completely halt Ireland’s scoring rate, allowing the hosts to finish strongly.

Matthew Hollard and Jai Moondra Script Ireland’s Famous Win

Chasing 183, India needed a solid start but found themselves under pressure against a disciplined Irish bowling attack.

Abhishek Sharma stood out for the visitors, scoring a fighting half-century and emerging as India’s top scorer. However, he received little support from the rest of the batting line-up as wickets continued to tumble.

Matthew Hollard was the chief architect of India’s collapse, producing an excellent spell of 3/28. Jai Moondra also made a significant impact with figures of 2/26 as Ireland bundled India out for 148 to register a memorable 34-run victory.

The celebrations among the Irish players reflected the significance of the result as they took a 1-0 lead in the two-match T20I series.

New Era Under Shreyas Iyer Begins with Defeat

The Belfast encounter also marked the beginning of a new chapter for Indian cricket under Shreyas Iyer’s leadership.

Iyer, who had long been regarded by several pundits and former cricketers as a deserving captaincy candidate, finally got his opportunity to lead the Men in Blue. However, his first assignment ended in disappointment as Ireland outplayed India in all three departments.

With the 50-over World Cup in South Africa next year being the immediate priority and another T20 World Cup campaign on the horizon, the Indian team management will be eager to identify the right combination and players capable of helping India chase a third consecutive T20 world title.

India vs Ireland 1st T20I Brief Scores

(Lorcan Tucker 50 off 36 balls)

India: 148 all out
