Probably one of the greatest upsets in the history of US Open. Serena Williams was on her way to a calendar year Grand Slam before an unthinkable happened. Roberta Vinci stunned the world by beating the world no 1. The unseeded Italian made a magnificent comeback after going down in the first set. Even Serena’s 16 aces and 50 winners couldn’t stop a determined Vinci.
2.Novak Djokovic def. Roger Federer,
Novak Djokovic def. Roger Federer, 6-4, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4.
Djokovic extended his streak of wins over Federer. He showed lot of composure and technique to overcome the wizard of tennis. His forehand was so fierce which made Roger to make some unforced errors. But Roger showed some grit as he made a comeback to take the second set 7-5. As he was coming back to his midas touch Djokovic rallied through to win the next two sets and claim his 10th Grand Slam overall.
3.Fabio Fognini def. Rafael Nadal,

This was one of the biggest upset in the men’s category of US Open. It was a thrilling one too as Fabio Fognini seeded 32 made a terrific comeback to defeat former champion Rafael Nadal. Nadal was up a break in the third set and looked to be cruising to victory before the Italian sprung to life. He didn’t allow Rafael to settle down as he was all over him. Fognini came towards the net to cut the rally and snatched points through some unplayable drops. His forehand made Nadal run for the ball as the Spaniard went down fighting ultimately losing the match. It was heartbreaking for Rafa’s fans but the match will be remembered for years and close to the heart of tennis lovers.
4.Feliciano Lopez def. Mardy Fish,
Feliciano Lopez def. Mardy Fish, 2-6, 6-3, 1-6, 7-5, 6-3
It was a shocking end Fish’s career as he went down fighting against a lower seeded Feliciano Lopez. He messed up his opportunity when he had a chance to serve for the match at 5-4 in the fourth but was broken at love. Lopez seized this opportunity and made most of it as he won the fourth set and took the match to the final set. Fish unafinble to recover from the errors lost the final set and ended his career on a sad note.
5.Simona Halep def. Sabine Lisicki,
Simona Halep def. Sabine Lisicki, 6-7, 7-5, 6-2
Sabine Lisicki’s steep rise in the world of tennis was put to a halt by World No. 2 Halep. She needed three hours and 18 minutes to finally outlast No. 24 seed Lisicki in a punishing match with a spot in the quarterfinals on the line. Despite soaring temperatures and a 10-minute break to put the heat rule into effect, Halep kept running as Lisicki continued to bring her into the net. In the end, consistency came out on top as Halep limited her errors in the crucial moments.
